Newly minted Oscar nominees Emma Stone (Birdman) and Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) will lead Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ Battle of the Sexes as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The film, a comedy with political and dramatic elements, will center on the historic tennis match between the two pros. Gender issues will be one of the main focuses of the film.
Dayton and Faris helmed Carell in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), which went on to win Oscars for its original screenplay from Michael Arndt and Alan Arkin’s supporting performance. They will direct from a script penned by Simon Beaufoy, who won the adapted screenplay Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and reaped a nomination for 127 Hours (2010).

Production will begin in the fall, so Battle should be ready for release in 2016. Fox Searchlight is in charge of U.S. distribution; the film could be a major awards player for all involved – especially for Stone and Carell..
