Oscar Predictions 2015: Who’s Here for Jenny’s Wedding?

jennyswedding_picIf you have a problem with this picture, you’re the reason this movie’s existence is so important – unless, of course, it’s the yellow blanket that irks you.

Hey all! Back for another predictions update!

In case you missed them, here are some news bits that may prove relevant during the awards season:

Mary Agnes Donoghue’s Jenny’s Wedding gets a limited release on July 31. Distributed by IFC Films, this contemporary piece may seem too light for the motion-picture academy. But given the queer- and woman-centric films already in the Oscar conversation and the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of marriage equality (!!!), I think it’s worth considering, even as a long shot.

Pete Docter’s Inside Out tops the U.S. box office – finally. In a tight race for the top spot, the Disney/Pixar release raked in $29.77 million, pulling off a narrow victory over Jurassic World, which grossed $29.24 million over the weekend. Major releases Terminator Genisys and Magic Mike XXL disappointed with $27.02 million and $12.85 million (yikes), respectively.

“See You Again” from Furious 7 tops the Billboard Hot 100 for an 11th week. A smaller news item, of course, since its chart dominance has been documented here and elsewhere. But this can only help Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s rap ballad stand out among the power players (Diane Warren, for instance) in the mix.

Now, this week’s predictions:
