Every time a music biopic gets the greenlight, an Oscar publicist gets their wings – or so I hear. People seem to have Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light high on their lists, but perhaps it’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton that will strike big with audiences, as it depicts a pivotal moment in the history of popular music and touches on issues that still affect our nation today.
Compton may end the year as a legitimate contender, but if nothing else, the musical landscape of the film should be considered for obvious reasons. Indeed, some new material from Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar will appear on the film’s soundtrack. It’s unknown whether Eminem and Lamar get their own tracks or simply feature; no word on whether this music will feature in the body of the film or during the end credits, either.
“Dr. Dre, it took him 15 years to step out and say, ’I want to do music again’ in the way that he’s doing it. The soundtrack is insane. Seriously, it’s incredible. He went deep and you can hear some of his influences, with jazz and soul and a little bit of funk. And Kendrick Lamar is on, Eminem; a lot of great guest stars. But it’s really Dre and how he’s evolved and how he’s matured as not only a person, but as an artist. It’s deep and it’s great.”
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters across the United States on August 14, 2015.
