Warner Bros. has set David Gordon Green’s Our Brand is Crisis for release on Oct. 30, an Oscar season-ready date that pits the film against Relativity’s Autobahn and Paramount’s Scouts vs. Zombies.
The film is based on the 2006 documentary of the same name, which focuses on the power of American political campaign marketing practices and their potential for negative consequences. Sandra Bullock leads Crisis as “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a retired political consultant hired by an unpopular Bolivian president to help him win. Joaquim de Almeida, Ann Dowd, Zoe Kazan, Anthony Mackie, Scoot McNairy, and Billy Bob Thornton also star.
Other awards potentials on WB’s slate for 2015 are Scott Cooper’s Venice-bound Black Mass, Ryan Coogler’s Creed, Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special, and Joe Wright’s Pan; George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road may get a push, too. However, Bullock’s star power, the against-type nature of her turn, and the October release push Crisis to the top of the distrib’s slate, as far as I can see – maybe we’ll see it at Toronto?
A final note: The Hollywood Reporter describes the film, scripted by Peter Straughan, as a political drama, though it had been earlier described as a political black comedy/satire.
