Why? The reigning best-actor champ leads a topical film that allows for a “transformative” performance. Focus’ (presumed) biggie for the season, Danish looks to find a sizable audience and strike well with the guild and industry awards…

Why not? But critics may not throw their support behind this one at year’s end; they’re hardly doing as much now, as some have deemed it insensitive and/or lame Oscar bait. Pulling off two wins in a row is possible if you’re Tom Hanks or Spencer Tracy; for now, Redmayne lacks their favor among American moviegoers. The actor’s win last year isn’t the most popular in recent memory.

Notes

Ranking: No. 2 as of Sept. 9, 2015
