Why? Bullock continues the unlikely trend of flexing her acting muscles after winning an Oscar, and early word suggests that this is career-best work. Also, the motion-picture academy loves her. Bullock looks like WB’s primary, most realistic (sorry, Charlize) push for best actress at the moment – even if WB gives its main push to another film on its slate. (And while it doesn’t help directly, the massive box office for Minions can’t hurt.)

Why not? A fierce yet fluctuating best-actress field hardly helps, especially when considering that Oscar’s only recognized Bullock when she takes on emotionally charged roles; I doubt her role in this political drama fits that bill. And even then, she was a non-factor for best picture-nominated heartstring tugger Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011).
