About the Film

Role: Ray, a trans teen in New York City, going through his transition

  • Toronto International Film Festival – World Premiere (Sept. 12, 2015)

U.S. Distributor: The Weinstein Co.
U.S. Release Date: Sept. 18, 2015 (limited)
U.S. Box Office: N/A

Why? Fanning has taken on a vast array of roles over the last several years; many might see her as due for at least a nomination. Over the last 20 years, Hilary Swank and Jared Leto won Oscars for their portrayals of trans characters – on their first nominations, no less. Fanning also features in the seemingly Oscar-friendly Trumbo, so visibility shouldn’t be an issue.

Why not? Ray looks like more of a commercial play for Weinstein than anything else. Other young actresses with more clout and recognition are in the fray this year. Not that it matters for Ray’s awards hopes at this point, but director Gaby Dellal made some ignorant/uninformed statements about trans people that’s already produced something of a backlash.

Ranking: No. 20 as of Aug. 26, 2015
