Role: Vanessa, a former dancer who drifts apart from her husband, an American writer named Roland (Brad Pitt), as they travel through France in the mid-1970s

Why? A small-scale romantic drama with Pitt sounds like an Oscar player on paper – will Jolie and Pitt become this generation’s Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward? In what looks like a banner year for woman-centric films, Jolie Pitt may become the first woman to direct herself to an acting nomination – she may be Universal’s priority here unless the distributor begins to push Amy Schumer and/or Crimson Peak exceeds expectations.

Why not? But either situation (if not both) may take hold. More importantly, the film industry still marginalizes films made by, about, and/or for women. The lack of love for Jolie Pitt’s Unbroken – a World War II epic, mind you – last year is hardly promising.
