  • Sundance Film Festival – World Premiere; In Competition (Jan. 30, 2015)

U.S. Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics
U.S. Release Date: Aug. 21, 2015 (limited)
U.S. Box Office: $1,184,511 (as of Sept. 7, 2015)

Why? If there’s room in the best-actress race for a comeback, Tomlin looks like the safest bet. Strong reviews out of Sundance boosted the comedy’s profile; more recent reviews bring up the word “Oscar” more than a proper review should a lot, so maybe the critics will go to bat for Tomlin at year’s end. An Emmy win for Grace and Frankie could kickstart a major campaign for the actress…

Why not? At the end of the day, Grandma is a tiny, late-summer release that’ll need a sizable campaign. With the Cate Blanchett-led Truth on Sony Pictures Classics’ slate, will Grandma and Tomlin’s turn therein even be the specialty distributor’s priority? Blythe Danner also looks to vie for veteran votes with the first screener of the season.

Ranking: No. 8 as of Sept. 7, 2015
