Why? Damien Chazelle made good on his Whiplash (2014) promise with the original musical La La Land, and Stone apparently works wonders in the film. She should easily win the Golden Globe, and other awards – including the Oscar – should follow.

Why not? How will Stone’s turn here compare to performances with more gravitas (Viola Davis in Fences)? Will more seasoned actors (Davis (again), Annette Bening for 20th Century Women) seem like better choices to Oscar voters?
