Why? The Clements-Musker duo feels due for Oscar, yes? Broadway fave Lin-Manuel Miranda, right off the heels of soon-to-be 800-time Tony winner Hamilton, co-wrote the music. While (some) Disney princesses of old already subverted expectations, Disney’s been doing a great job at modernizing what it means to be a Disney heroine; Moana looks to be an extension of that progress. A year-end releases inspires confidence.

Why not? If the film is perceived as a disappointment in any way (read: if it isn’t the next Frozen (2013)), people may write it off as a failure, which could pave the way for Zootopia or Finding Dory or maybe even a non-Disney film – hey, you never know – to win.
