Won: Best Picture (with George Clooney and Grant Heslov) for Argo (2012)

Oscar Present?
Role: Nick Dunne, the bar owner and former journalist whom many believe killed his missing wife, Amy Elliott Dunne (played by Rosamund Pike)

Awards: N/A
Nominations: N/A

Festivals:

  • New York Film Festival (2014) – Opening Film

Why? Affleck’s never picked up an acting nomination despite returning to Hollywood’s good graces with Gone Baby Gone (2007), The Town (2010), and best picture-winning Argo (2012); his absence from the lineup would raise eyebrows if Gone Girl becomes an Oscar hit. Director David Fincher’s last three films each scored (at least) one lead acting nomination…

Why not? But Rosamund Pike’s turn has more hype. The Cannes favorites, the comeback kids, and the newcomers already make for a crowded field.

Ranking: No. 10 as of Aug. 2, 2014
