Role: James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, the hardest working man in show business – but if we get past the nicknames, he’s a music artist who revolutionized genres of music and the music industry as a whole
Why? Boseman impressed audiences and critics as Jackie Robinson in 42 (2013). A musical biopic might be his ticket to a nomination; even critics who are cool on the film have praised Boseman’s work. Director Tate Taylor’s last film picked up three acting nominations…
Why not? But that film was box-office smash The Help (2011); the box office for this one – so far, at least – is less than impressive. And as Nathaniel Rogers recently pointed out, women gain more traction for biopics of singers than men do.
Ranking: No. 11 as of Aug. 2, 2014
