Oscar Present?
Role: Diane “Die” Després, “[a] working-class Quebec woman with a messy personal life” and a troubled teenage son (via TIFF)

Awards: N/A
Nominations: N/A

Festivals:

  • Cannes Film Festival (2014) – World Premiere
  • Telluride Film Festival (2014)
  • Toronto International Film Festival (2014)

Why? Dorval picked up best-in-show reviews for Xavier Dolan’s latest drama. She might become a favorite of critics groups at year’s end – we can at least count on the Los Angeles Film Critics Association to give her some kind of shout-out, right?

Why not? Performances in foreign-language films – even if acclaimed – rarely make the cut. Does Roadside Attractions still plan on releasing the film this year?

Ranking: No. 9 as of Sept. 12, 2014
