Oscar History: One nomination
Nominated: Best Actress in a Leading Role for Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Role: Megan, a 28-year-old who’s going through a quarter-life crisis
- Sundance Film Festival (2014) – World Premiere
- Toronto International Film Festival (2014) – International Premiere
Why? We know Knightley mostly for frilly costume pieces – and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but she jumped that ship, thankfully – but she recently pushed her abilities by starring in the musical Begin Again. Going against type in this Lynn Shelton comedy further flexes her acting muscle, which might impress Oscar voters…
Why not? But comedies like this rarely stick with the motion-picture academy – maybe Laggies gets Knightley an Indie Spirit nod if its budget is small enough? – and critical consensus is in that good-not-great range at the moment. Some don’t buy Knightley’s American accent. Besides, her big awards pony this year is The Imitation Game, and she might go lead for that one.
Ranking: Unranked as of Aug. 15, 2014
