Oscar Present?
Role: Chelsea Brown, a reporter trying to discover the real story behind comedian-turned-actor Andre Allen (Chris Rock)

Awards: N/A
Nominations: N/A
Festivals:

  • Toronto International Film Festival (2014) – World Premiere

Why? Dawson’s been a prominent actress for more than a decade, and she’s impressed before – she would have been a contender for Rent (2005) had the film been, you know, better. Top Five was a hit at Toronto that sparked surprise Oscar talk and a huge bidding war for the U.S. distribution rights. The comparisons to Annie Hall (1977) certainly help.

Why not? Mainstream comedies have a difficult time scoring big with Oscar – Bridesmaids (2011) came close. Top Five might be a huge player in screenplay but nowhere else.

Ranking: No. 14 as of Oct. 17, 2014
