Best Original Song 2014: “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights

Written by: Diane Warren
Performed by: Rita Ora

Diane Warren is a six-time nominee for the following songs:

  • “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” (alongside Albert Hammond) from Mannequin (1987)
  • “Because You Loved Me” from Up Close & Personal (1996)
  • “How Do I Live” from Con Air (1997)
  • “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from Armageddon (1998)
  • “Music of My Heart” from Music of the Heart (1999)
  • “There You’ll Be” from Pearl Harbor (2001)

Awards: N/A
Nominations: N/A
Charts (U.S.): N/A

Festivals:

  • Toronto International Film Festival (2014)

Why? Six-time nominee Diane Warren returns with this ballad from a music-driven film that might be a box-office hit when it debuts.

Why not? The motion-picture academy didn’t nominate Warren for her Golden Globe-winning “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from Burlesque (2010). Beyond the Lights needs to be a hit; the song could use some exposure, too – each of Warren’s six nominated tunes hit the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100.*

* Trisha Yearwood’s recording of “How Do I Live” – the recording used in Con Air – hit No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, LeAnn Rimes’ recording of “How Do I Live” – released at the same time as Yearwood’s – hit No. 2 on the same chart. In other words, we can technically say that each of Warren’s nominated tunes hit the top 10 of the Hot 100.

Ranking: No. 5 as of Oct. 28, 2014
