Why? Sia picked up a Golden Globe nod for her Burlesque (2010) ballad, “Bound to You,” and has worked on other prominent soundtracks – The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), Epic (2013), and The Great Gatsby (2013), among others. This year gave way to Sia’s biggest mainstream recognition yet (“Chandelier”/1000 Forms of Fear) and “Guts Over Fear,” her Billboard Hot 100-charting contribution to The Equalizer. With so much working in her favor, this might be the music branch’s perfect opportunity to recognize Sia.

Why not? Like Burlesque, the perceived quality of the film itself might be an issue. Coldplay (“Miracles” from Unbroken) and Common and John Legend (“Glory” from Selma), among others, might fill this year’s quota for songs by popular music artists.

Ranking: No. 4 as of Nov. 18, 2014
