Written and performed by: Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani

  • Pharrell Williams is a one-time nominee in this category for “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 (2013).

Why? Last year’s winner – “Let It Go” from Frozen, if you somehow forgot – may have been inescapable, but Williams’ nominated “Happy” was even more popular. Perhaps Williams gets some overdue love this year for another tune in a family film?

Why not? Giving Paddington a qualifying release (assumedly) for the sake of getting “Shine” a nomination? Reminds me of how “Sweeter than Fiction” from One Chance played out last year: recognized with a Golden Globe nod but forgotten when Oscar rolled around. Of course, the last-minute announcement is suspicious, too. And there’s an even bigger catch: we still need to hear the song!

Ranking: No. 17 as of Nov. 24, 2014
