Best Original Song 2014: “Yellow Flicker Beat” from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

Written by: Ella Yelich-O’Connor, a.k.a. Lorde, and Joel Little
Performed by: Lorde

U.S. Charts (Billboard):

  • Billboard Hot 100: No. 74
  • Billboard Digital Songs: No. 31
  • Billboard Hot Rock Songs: No. 6
  • Billboard Hot Rock Airplay: No. 13
  • Billboard Alternative Songs: No. 10
  • Billboard Adult Alternative Songs: No. 10

Why? Lorde is already an acclaimed, respected songwriter, having won the song of the year Grammy for “Royals” earlier this year. (Industry clout helped Adele snag the original song Oscar in 2012, remember.) A nod for “Yellow Flicker Beat” could function as recognition of her curation of the film’s soundtrack. The Hunger Games franchise will get an original song nomination at some point, right?

Why not? Previous Hunger Games tunes “Abraham’s Daughter” and “Atlas” fit into the music branch’s wheelhouse much better than “Yellow Flicker Beat,” but the music branch failed to recognize them. Voters might be reluctant to honor Lorde on ethos alone so early in her career. “Yellow Flicker Beat” is hardly the kind of thing the music branch goes for, regardless.

Ranking: No. 22 as of Nov. 23, 2014
