Why? David Fincher’s last three films each scored at least one major nod – and at least one win. With popular material like this, Fincher has an exciting playground with which to work. Ben Affleck might give the performance of his career, while Rosamund Pike, Emily Ratajkowski, and Carrie Coon could emerge as breakout stars. Word on the street for Tyler Perry is good, too. If nothing else, Gone Girl could be one of the year’s best acting showcases.

Why not? Voters might find this too “pulpy” for their tastes. Films with stories/narratives that Oscar traditionally favors will be in the mix.

Ranking: No. 2 as of Aug. DATE, 2014
