Why? The acclaimed young-adult drama The Fault in Our Stars brought him to a new level of fame. Paramount seems to have confidence in Reitman’s dark dramedy; this role – which many will perceive as more substantive than his TFIOS turn might be his ticket to an Oscar nod.

Why not? The more-established Adam Sandler might provide internal competition; which actors in this expansive ensemble will generate the most discussion? (My bets are on Kaitlyn Dever and Rosemarie DeWitt, by the way.) And for that matter, will the motion-picture academy even bother with a film this dark and this content-heavy?
