Why? The “Kubrick meets Spielberg” hype for Christopher Nolan’s latest is certainly promising, and Chastain’s quickly become one of her generation’s most respected actresses. She’ll be on voters’ minds – she will push for a lead nod for J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, too, and also leads the Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby films and Miss Julie for Liv Ullmann (which probably won’t hit before the end of the year but helped the chatter, regardless). Ubiquity helped her in 2011; can it help her this year?

Why not? Despite the early word, Nolan is hardly known for his strong portrayals of women. Of course, this is Chastain…

Ranking: No. 5 as of Oct. 19, 2014
