Oscar History: Two nominations
Nominated: Best Actress in a Leading Role for 21 Grams (2003)
Nominated: Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Impossible (2012)
Role: Daka, a pregnant Russian stripper
- Toronto International Film Festival (2014) – World Premiere
Why? St. Vincent has the potential to be “the movie that no one saw coming” (but if that happens, I did), and even if it didn’t fit into that category, Naomi Watts playing a pregnant Russian stripper in a comedy? It’s at least bound to turn the heads of Oscar voters. Birdman, while it’s probably more of a play for Emma Stone than it is for Watts, gives her bonus points and might help her get some awards for her body of work at the end of the year.
Why not? Melissa McCarthy might go supporting for her performance in the film; it seems like a borderline lead/supporting role, such as Helen Hunt in As Good as It Gets (1997) or Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook (2012). (Of course, both actresses went lead, so…).
Ranking: No. 5 as of Aug. 27, 2014
