Oscar Present?
Role: Mom, the mother of Mason (Ellar Coltrane)

Awards:

  • Los Angeles Film Critics Association (2014) – Best Actress
  • New York Film Critics Circle (2014) – Best Supporting Actress
  • New York Film Critics Online (2014) – Best Supporting Actress
  • Seattle International Film Festival (2014) – Best Actress

Nominations:

Festivals: N/A

  • Sundance Film Festival (2014) – World Premiere
  • Berlin International Film Festival (2014)
  • SXSW (2014)

Why? Arquette picked up career-best reviews for this little movie that could. A win for her would be a great way to honor the film if/when it doesn’t end up taking best picture. Does her win with the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) forecast her being a/the critics’ darling this season.

Why not? Arquette is excellent, but it’s a low-key performance – contenders with flashier parts in bigger contenders might steal her thunder with the guild and industry awards. Boyhood is really all about writer-director Richard Linklater and his vision.

Ranking: No. 1 as of Dec. 1, 2014
