Best Original Song 2017

Updated: Mar. 6, 2017

I will include links to songs that have been released as they appear on sites like YouTube and Soundcloud; I will attach these links to the songs’ titles. I will also include links for the songs’ pages as I post them; I will attach these links at the end of the songs’ listings.

Remember, my official predictions include only songs from films set for distribution in the United States. The process of guessing what will and will not make the cut always seems to be collaborative, so feel free to leave a comment (or a tweet) that addresses any relevant concerns.

Predicted Nominees

  1. Song from Call Me by Your Name (more)

  2. “How Does a Moment Last Forever” from Beauty and the Beast (more)

  3. “Not Afraid Anymore” from Fifty Shades Darker (more)

  4. “Evermore” from Beauty and the Beast (more)

  5. Song from Call Me by Your Name (more)

Next in Line?

  1. “Days in the Sun” from Beauty and the Beast (more)
  2. “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” from Fifty Shades Darker (more)

Other Contenders

As anyone who pays attention to this race (before the unveiling of the shortlist in December) knows, we have a difficult time figuring out which songs are (in)eligible, so some of the songs listed might be ineligible when all is said and done. Additionally, I imagine that the shortlist will include songs I’ve missed. In other words, these lists function as an unofficial guide to the possible contenders, not a final word on songs’ eligibility or lack thereof.

Seemingly Eligible

Purposefully Excluded

In Limbo

I regard these songs as ineligible at the moment, because a) the films might not hit theaters this year due to distributors’ schedules or their not being ready, or b) the films lack stateside distribution altogether. But as anyone who follows this mess knows, things can change at a moment’s notice.
