Why? Warren was seen as a potential upset for her Beyond the Lights tune last year; she could very well win this year (finally) for “Till It Happens to You.” In a twist, the unlikely duo of Warren and Gaga sees both artists working well (denying their traditional strengths and improving on perceived weaknesses?) to create this harrowing song for a documentary with tough yet important subject matter.

Why not? Several soundtrack songs boasted crucial roles in big movies, and some of those became chart-topping hits. So, despite Gaga’s high profile and Warren’s industry clout, the relatively low profile of The Hunting Ground may inhibit the song’s chances of Oscar glory if Radius-TWC fails to campaign it. Even so, another documentary track – Alicia Keys’ “Story to Tell” from He Named Me Malala – may steal its thunder.

Ranking No. 1 as of Sept. 9, 2015
